You’ve just had Christmas Lunch (Dinner? You decide!) and now it’s time to play a game… the classic is Charades… easy to play, everyone ‘knows’ the rules, you don’t even need to leave the comfort of your chair… sounds like a plan.
Maybe you’re a little bit more artistic so Pictionary is the order of the day? Half the fun is not actually being artistic at all and having a laugh at people’s scribbles… There’s something about drawing games that captures the joy of the holidays, and that’s what we are looking at on this blog.
So, to be perfectly honest, we reckon we don’t even need to discuss Pictionary which is the standard that all drawing games are held up against, in which case we are going to break our usual habit of naming one contender and give you a pair of challengers! Why not? It’s good to mix it up.
So, with no further ado…
The new drawing contender, number ONE! Caution Signs
Wise Wizard Games have created a new brand this year which is focused on the lighter side of games… Wacky Wizard Games. One of the three games they released, just happens to be a drawing game… this is Caution Signs!
Since we introduced this to our cafes, this has made a great impact. It’s fast and just the right amount of silly, let’s tell you how it works.
Each round, one person is the guesser and everyone else is a sketcher. Each sketcher gets a card from both decks and puts them together and that’s what they have to draw. One word describes the object like ‘Mature’ or ‘Flying’ and the other is the thing, like ‘Wizard’ or ‘Otter’. Everyone only gets 20 seconds to draw so needs to be fast, there’s an amazing example above! I know, it should be hung in the Louvre, I missed my calling, clearly.
When the 20 seconds are up, it’s pens down and cards in two piles, mix them up and add two of each card as well then flip them over. The guesser tries to match the cards to the picture. Clearly the examples above are so good that they are obvious?
The guesser does their best at this matching and when they are locked in then the sketchers hold up 0, 1 or 2 fingers to show how well they did. Points for both if the 2 cards are right, only points for the sketcher if only 1 card matches. Keep going for a set number of rounds and whoever scores most, wins. Easy.
The joy here is trying to draw the weird matches and seeing where the guesser goes with your 20 second doodle… as with most drawing games, it sounds simple but the laughter comes from the daft rapid drawings.
We love the great scoreboard too, having the simple diagram at the top just makes it that little bit easier to remember how the points works. Just what you need after a few sherries.
We can’t recommend this enough and as it’s two cards each time, you’ll likely never draw the same thing twice!

The new drawing contender number TWO! Six Second Scribbles
I mean, 20 seconds to draw something, how lucky are you? That’s forever really especially when you compare it to Six Second Scribbles by Gamely Games.
Here we are drawing 10 themed things in a minute so, on average, it’s six seconds per scribble! It’s a balance of quality and quantity really… everyone draws at the same time and then passes their sheet to another player, different each round, to try and guess all of the things that have been drawn. You do get to give them the category and the artist and guesser will both get a point for each correct answer. Play a few rounds and tot up those points! It’s that easy.
Don’t you wish you were guessing my drawings? They are clearly so obvious. Sometimes I amaze myself.
Gamely encourage you to add extra rules and gives a great example… The EXTRA CHANCE rule is genius, in smaller groups you give the next guesser in line a chance to guess the ones that the original guesser gets wrong, no points here for the artist on extra chance guesses but if it’s still wrong, take it to the next player instead. Lovely!
Time is clearly NOT on your side in this game, but just don’t let panic settle in and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish. There are three difficulty levels too, Easy, Tricky and Almost Impossible. A challenge for all players!
Just remember you can’t always be as good as our examples here.
