For us, this time of the year is when you get some extra free time to play games but you may have to leave the house and go ‘elsewhere’… Luckily, as ever, we’ve got you covered so without further ado, what’s suitable for your suitcase?

You don’t have to go to Portugal…

Yeah, you know we love this game, but the normal Azul is not very travel friendly where as this beauty truly is. Azul Mini is the way to go for that Azul hit on the go, to be honest, we prefer it to the original as it’s a masterclass in compact design and if you’ve never played it (where have you been?) you deserve to. Not only can you get the original in this travel friendly version but now there is Azul Summer Pavilion Mini too! It’s our go to ‘next step’ when taking guests through the Azul series of games.
I hear Mexico is nice this time of year…
We almost went for Italy with this one (100% Pizza was the way to go…) but as the game round always starts with taco, Mexico seemed a better fit, it also doesn’t hurt that we have tacos on the menu..
This will fit in any suitcase and its fast card slapping shenangians are suitable for most ages. If you do find your gaming group to be on the younger side then instead of Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza you can always go for Taco Kitten Pizza, the kid friendly version, it’s even got ice-cream in it.
Ah man, we really should have gone for Italy…

How about a fishing trip?
You do realise that the links about going on Holiday are going to get weaker and weaker as we go through this blog don’t you? I mean they’re already pretty weak now… ah well…
Those amazing innovators at Big Potato Games (here’s a blog about them!) have only gone and made a series of their crowd pleasing games in smaller versions!
Not only are Sounds Fishy (get it, fishing trip?), Don’t Get Got, and Chameleon available in travel tins but some of their best family games are in handy sized boxes ideal for travel, we’re talking Dino Dump, Junior Colour Brain, and The Muddles.
It doesn’t even stop there though as even more of their classics have been translated over to the same sized handy boxes as those previous games, we’re talking about Herd Mentality, Colour Brain, and Obama Llama! Yeah, something for everyone here and also suitable for most ages and player counts too.
One does not simply go on holiday…
A walking trip maybe? Mordor is pretty cheap these days (as long as you don’t mind the locals), the border controls are pretty strict though…
We told you the links would get more and more of a stretch… What we’re talking about here though is not ony the excellent co-operative game Lord of the Rings: Trick-Taking Game but also the excellent game Similo, one of which is a Lord of the Rings version!
Similo is honestly great for all ages and there are lots of variants to choose from, be it Harry Potter or Animals, there are categories for most tastes.
If you’re going to the seaside then a trip to the Aquarium may be in order…
Although you’re unlikely to see a Mantis as even bulletproof glass won’t stop them…
Here we have the Grab & Game series of modern classics from Exploding Kittens (we’re not even going to refer to the weak link with holidays above, best just move on, it never happened). They’ve taken all their most popular games and converted them to travel versions… From Exploding Kittens itself to the aforementioned Mantis as well as Poetry for Neanderthals and most recently Really Loud Librarians. With boxes no bigger than a twin-pack of playing cards you’re sure to find space in your luggage for these!

Holidays are clearly popular (who doesn’t like to get away for a while?) and the boardgaming hobby is here to say too, so the breadth of travel options out there for games that we haven’t even mentioned yet is understandably staggering.

Most stuff by Oink Games (especially Dropolter, Scout, and the improved version of a classic Deep Sea Adventure Boost) are made for travel, with their dinky boxes with big game play in check them out on this blog post.
Qwirkle Travel takes the award winning Qwirkle and shrinks it down as well as popping it in a handy sized travel case.
Hive is the perfect travel 2-player abstract game and Hive Pocket is even better for carrying around with you.
Love letter has always been an easy one to chuck in your luggage too, just a small bag of deception and bluff that doesn’t out stay its welcome.
The handy tin that Sushi Go! comes in means it can take a lot of punishment when carried around.
The great party game That’s Not A Hat is also just a deck of cards too and will bamboozle you and provide plenty of fun memories!
